Karnataka is considering a major convention and tourism facility in Bengaluru modelled on Delhi’s Bharat Mandapam, as the state looks to expand infrastructure for large-scale events, cultural programmes and tourism.

Chief Minister D K Shivakumar announced the proposal while inaugurating the first Karnataka Tourism Awards at Palace Grounds in Bengaluru on September 27. The proposed facility, tentatively referred to as Karnataka Mandapam, is still at the planning stage.

The government is examining three possible locations — Jakkur, the Mysuru Lamps premises and the NGEF premises. Proximity to a Metro station is also being considered an important factor in selecting the site.

However, the government has not yet finalised the location or disclosed the proposed project cost, built-up area or the capacity of the convention facility. Details such as exhibition halls, meeting spaces, hospitality facilities and parking capacity are also yet to be announced.

The proposal comes as Bengaluru seeks to accommodate a growing number of business, cultural and entertainment events. According to the Chief Minister, the BookMyShow team has discussed plans to hold around 25 to 30 shows a year in the city, including international performances.

Karnataka is also separately considering a convention centre in Bengaluru. The proposal is expected to be discussed with the Karnataka State Cricket Association. At present, it is unclear whether this convention centre and the proposed Karnataka Mandapam will eventually form part of the same development or proceed as separate projects.

The proposed facility is part of a broader push by the Karnataka government to strengthen tourism infrastructure across the state. The government has highlighted destinations such as Kodagu and the Malnad region while stressing the need to protect local culture and the environment.

Karnataka has also approved the Coastal Malnad Karnataka Tourism Policy-2026, under which tourism projects are set to receive industry and infrastructure status. The state is also seeking central support on Coastal Regulation Zone-related issues as it explores greater tourism activity along the coast.

For Bengaluru, the immediate focus remains on identifying a suitable site and assessing the city’s wider convention infrastructure requirements. Until these decisions are made, Karnataka Mandapam remains a proposal rather than an approved construction project, with no final cost or implementation timeline announced.
