BEML has secured a ₹180.60 crore order from Integral Coach Factory (ICF) for the manufacturing and supply of Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets, adding another contract to the state-owned engineering company’s growing railway business.
The order comes as Indian Railways expands the Vande Bharat platform beyond its existing chair-car configuration. The sleeper version is being developed for longer-distance journeys, bringing the high-speed train platform into overnight travel.
According to the company’s regulatory filing, the latest contract specifically covers the manufacture and supply of Vande Bharat sleeper trainsets. For BEML, the order further strengthens its involvement in one of Indian Railways’ key modernisation programmes.
The move towards sleeper services is significant for the Vande Bharat programme. While the existing trains have largely focused on premium daytime intercity travel, sleeper trainsets are intended to extend the platform to longer routes where overnight connectivity is important.
BEML has been expanding its presence in the rail and metro segment alongside its established businesses in defence equipment and heavy engineering. The company manufactures rail and metro coaches as well as a range of engineering products, making the Vande Bharat programme an important opportunity within its broader railway portfolio.
The ₹180.60 crore order from ICF also comes at a time when Indian Railways is looking to introduce more modern trainsets across its network. The development of sleeper variants is expected to broaden the operating scope of the Vande Bharat platform and provide passengers with a modern alternative for longer-distance journeys.
For BEML, the contract adds to its order pipeline in the railway sector while reinforcing its role in the production ecosystem supporting India’s next generation of passenger trains. As sleeper services become an increasingly important part of the Vande Bharat programme, manufacturers such as BEML are likely to remain central to the expansion of the network.
The latest order therefore marks more than another contract win for BEML. It reflects the continuing evolution of the Vande Bharat programme from premium daytime connectivity towards a wider rail network that also caters to long-distance overnight travel.
