Chennai Airport Expansion Under Consideration After Parandur Project Shelved

Tamil Nadu is exploring plans to expand Chennai Airport at Meenambakkam after the proposed Parandur greenfield international airport project was shelved, with the focus now shifting towards strengthening the existing airport’s capacity and connectivity.

The proposed expansion could increase Chennai Airport’s annual passenger-handling capacity to 55 million, or 5.5 crore passengers, according to the plans under consideration.

A key part of the proposed infrastructure upgrade is a new access road connecting the airport through Pozhichalur and Tharapakkam. The Chennai Unified Metropolitan Transport Authority (CUMTA) has recommended the access road, which is also intended to provide a direct connection between the airport and the Tambaram-Maduravoyal bypass road.

The proposed road infrastructure is being planned with an emphasis on limiting its impact on surrounding residential areas. Authorities are also looking at solutions that would avoid significant impact on the Adyar River, including the possibility of an elevated road.

The move comes after Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin announced the decision to shelve the proposed Parandur airport project in the Assembly. The Parandur proposal had been planned as a major greenfield airport development to meet Chennai’s long-term aviation requirements.

With the Parandur project no longer moving forward, expanding the existing Meenambakkam airport has emerged as an alternative approach to increasing aviation capacity in the Chennai region.

The proposed improvements are expected to focus not only on passenger capacity but also on strengthening road connectivity to the airport. Better access could help address traffic-related challenges faced by passengers and airport users, particularly along Chennai’s busy southern and western corridors.

The scale of the proposed expansion will be significant, given Chennai’s growing passenger and commercial aviation requirements. Increasing capacity at the existing airport could also allow the city to accommodate future traffic while a broader long-term aviation strategy for the metropolitan region is evaluated.

However, the expansion plans remain under consideration, and details regarding the project’s final configuration, implementation schedule and investment have not yet been specified.
