Perambur, one of North Chennai’s key urban constituencies, is set for a major infrastructure upgrade as the Tamil Nadu government plans to implement nearly 50 development projects worth ₹1,013 crore over the next two to three years. The proposed investments span housing, urban infrastructure, healthcare, education, sports and public utilities, making it one of the largest constituency-level development initiatives in Chennai.
Housing will receive the highest allocation, with ₹544 crore earmarked by the Tamil Nadu Urban Habitat Development Board (TNUHDB). The board plans to construct and reconstruct nearly 2,000 housing units across Vyasarpadi. A new tenement block has been proposed on vacant land near Mullai Nagar, while two ageing housing colonies, including the Old Block with 858 tenements and the Udhaya Suriyan Nagar complex with 684 units, are slated for complete reconstruction. Both residential blocks are more than four decades old and require extensive redevelopment.
Urban infrastructure projects valued at around ₹211 crore are also planned to improve mobility and public spaces across the constituency. One of the flagship proposals is North Chennai’s first pedestrian plaza and food street on North Avenue Road. The project, estimated at ₹15 crore, will feature dedicated pedestrian walkways, improved lighting, seating areas and nearly 90 food kiosks. Funding is expected through the Chief Minister’s Integrated Urban Transformation Mission, the Urban Challenge Fund and the Chennai City Partnership programme.
Education and youth development have also been prioritised. The government plans to establish an Ambedkar Study Centre at Dr Ambedkar Government Arts College to provide UPSC and competitive examination coaching. The campus will also receive a new administrative block, an auditorium and upgraded sports infrastructure, including facilities for basketball, football, kabaddi and volleyball.
Healthcare infrastructure will be strengthened through a new Urban Community Health Centre at Sathyamoorthy Nagar and a dedicated dialysis centre within the existing public health facility. Additional investments are also planned to upgrade power infrastructure and other public utilities across the constituency.
Officials said most projects are currently in the planning stage, with detailed project reports under preparation. While Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has already sanctioned ₹3 crore through the MLA Local Area Development Scheme for immediate works, the remaining projects will be implemented in phases after administrative approvals and funding allocations. Once completed, the projects are expected to significantly improve housing, civic amenities and quality of life for residents across Perambur.
