AM/NS India, the joint venture between ArcelorMittal and Nippon Steel, is set to begin construction of its ambitious greenfield steel plant in Andhra Pradesh on March 23. The project, valued at approximately ₹70,000 crore, marks one of the largest industrial investments in India’s steel sector in recent years and significantly strengthens the company’s expansion strategy in the southern and eastern markets.

The first phase of the project will add a capacity of 8.2 million tonnes, with operations expected to commence by the end of 2028 or early 2029. The Andhra Pradesh government has allocated around 2,200 acres of land near Visakhapatnam port, offering strong logistical advantages and access to export markets. The location is expected to play a crucial role in enhancing supply chain efficiency and reducing transportation costs.

Currently, AM/NS India operates a 9 million tonne capacity plant at Hazira in Gujarat, which is being expanded to 15 million tonnes. The new Andhra facility reflects the company’s intent to diversify its manufacturing footprint beyond western India and tap into rising demand from infrastructure, construction, and manufacturing sectors in the southern region.

The upcoming plant will focus on flat steel products along with downstream value added lines aimed at reducing dependence on imports. The company also plans to develop supporting infrastructure, including pipelines for raw material transportation, to ensure seamless operations.

The Andhra Pradesh government has actively supported the project by resolving initial challenges related to raw material logistics and land acquisition. Rehabilitation measures have also been implemented for affected families, ensuring smoother project execution.

With strong policy backing, strategic location advantages, and large scale investment, the AM/NS Andhra steel plant is expected to become a key driver of industrial growth, job creation, and infrastructure development in the region over the coming years.
