Bengaluru’s major infrastructure projects announced in the Karnataka Budget are gradually moving forward, even though most of them are yet to witness large scale construction activity on the ground. Key initiatives include the Bengaluru Business Corridor, the proposed north south tunnel road project, and new arterial roads planned along stormwater drain buffer zones. These projects are considered crucial for addressing long standing mobility challenges in the city and improving urban connectivity.

Among the projects showing notable progress is the Bengaluru Business Corridor, earlier known as the Peripheral Ring Road. The project had remained stalled for nearly two decades due to land acquisition challenges and legal disputes. Officials now say the project has entered a decisive phase, with hundreds of landowners agreeing to compensation structures offered by the Bangalore Development Authority. Tenders for the first stretch of the corridor are expected to be floated soon.

Another major initiative is the proposed north south tunnel road aimed at easing congestion across the city’s core corridors. The state government has supported the project by standing guarantor for loans, enabling the special purpose vehicle handling the project to secure financial approvals. Early tendering processes have already begun and further technical evaluations are currently under review.

At the same time, road network improvements across the city have begun to gather pace. Nearly 160 kilometres of white topping works and about 400 kilometres of black topping works are being undertaken to strengthen arterial and sub arterial roads. Authorities believe these upgrades will significantly improve traffic movement and road durability in several key urban zones.

While several projects have recorded progress in planning, financing, and land acquisition, large scale on ground execution is expected to begin in stages over the coming months. Officials believe that once tendering processes are completed, infrastructure development across Bengaluru could accelerate significantly, shaping the next phase of urban growth in India’s leading technology hub.
