Tamil Nadu is accelerating its ambition to position Thoothukudi as a major logistics gateway along India’s southern coast. In a significant move, the State Industries Promotion Corporation of Tamil Nadu has invited bids to appoint a consultant for developing a 173 acre multi modal logistics park in the port city.

The proposed park will be developed under the Public Private Partnership model with a 60 year concession period, creating long term opportunities for private investors in logistics, warehousing and integrated supply chain infrastructure. Sipcot has already earmarked the land parcel and will provide essential trunk infrastructure including internal roads, water supply, stormwater drainage, power connectivity and street lighting up to the project boundary.

Designed as a comprehensive freight aggregation hub, the facility is expected to leverage Thoothukudi’s strong road and rail connectivity. Its proximity to the expanding VOC Port will enable seamless multimodal cargo movement, reducing transit time and improving efficiency for exporters and importers across southern Tamil Nadu.

The master plan envisions a well rounded logistics ecosystem featuring domestic and bonded warehouses, container yards, truck terminals, railway siding, cold storage facilities and dedicated utility zones. Limited commercial and plug and play spaces have also been proposed to support ancillary services and value added logistics operations.

The initiative aligns with the state’s broader strategy to diversify logistics growth beyond Chennai and Coimbatore. With the proposed outer harbour project at VOC Port expected to enhance transshipment potential, Thoothukudi is emerging as a strategic node in regional and international trade corridors.

Once operational, the logistics park is expected to attract manufacturing and export oriented industries, generate employment and strengthen Tamil Nadu’s position as a preferred investment destination in the logistics and infrastructure sectors.
