Coimbatore International Airport is set to take a significant step forward in strengthening its infrastructure as Union Minister of Civil Aviation Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu prepares to launch the interim expansion works and new passenger amenities on February 20, 2026. The initiative comes at a crucial time when passenger traffic is steadily rising and existing facilities are nearing saturation.

The interim expansion focuses on reconfiguring the current terminal building and constructing an additional Security Hold Area. The domestic Security Hold Area will be expanded by 920 square metres, enabling the airport to accommodate 375 more passengers over the existing capacity of 675 passengers. The project, estimated at around Rs 13 crore, is being executed without disrupting regular airport operations.

According to airport officials, Coimbatore handled over 3.25 million passengers and more than 21,800 aircraft movements during the 2024 to 2025 financial year. With passenger numbers projected to grow sharply in the coming years, the expansion is aimed at preventing congestion and ensuring smoother processing during peak hours.

Alongside infrastructure upgrades, several passenger friendly amenities will also be inaugurated. These include the Udan Yatri Cafe offering refreshments at affordable prices, an AVSAR outlet that promotes locally made products such as Kovai Kora cotton, a dedicated kids zone, and a flybrary that allows passengers to read while they wait for boarding.

The developments are expected to enhance Coimbatore’s connectivity profile and support the city’s growing role as an industrial and commercial hub in Tamil Nadu. With improved capacity and upgraded facilities, the airport is positioning itself to handle future growth efficiently while offering a better travel experience.
