Chennai Metro Rail Limited is steadily advancing work on its ambitious Phase II expansion, with the Vadapalani–Panagal Park section of Corridor 4 scheduled to open by March 2027. This 3.5 kilometre underground stretch is a crucial part of the 26.1 kilometre Corridor 4 that will eventually connect Lighthouse in central Chennai with the Poonamallee Bypass in the city’s western suburbs.
Construction progress on the Vadapalani–Panagal Park segment has reached an important milestone, with tunnelling work already completed between the two stations. This marks a significant engineering achievement, paving the way for the next stages of the project. Track-laying activities are expected to begin shortly, indicating that the corridor is moving from heavy civil construction to systems installation.
At Panagal Park station, one of the most strategically important stations on Corridor 4, structural works have progressed up to the concourse and platform levels. Excavation and finishing activities are continuing at lower levels, while station architecture and systems integration will follow in the coming months. The station is being designed to play a vital operational role, with crossover tracks that will enable smooth train movements, depot access and emergency handling.
Metro officials have indicated that another section of Corridor 4, between Poonamallee and Vadapalani, could become operational earlier, possibly by February. This phased commissioning approach is expected to help ease congestion in western parts of the city even before the entire corridor becomes functional.
Once the Vadapalani–Panagal Park stretch is opened, commuters will gain direct metro access to T Nagar, one of Chennai’s busiest commercial and shopping districts. Passengers will be able to interchange at Vadapalani and seamlessly travel through the existing Phase I network, significantly reducing travel time and dependence on road-based transport.
With Chennai’s traffic volumes continuing to rise, the Phase II metro network is seen as a critical solution for sustainable urban mobility. The progress on Corridor 4 reinforces confidence that the city’s next-generation metro infrastructure is steadily taking shape, promising faster, cleaner and more reliable public transport for millions of daily commuters.
