Parandur Airport: Govt Unveils Comprehensive Rehab Plan for Displaced Families

The Tamil Nadu government has laid out an extensive package of rehabilitation and resettlement for families affected by the greenfield airport project at Parandur.

Each affected family will be allotted house sites according to their current land size cents for those having up to 5 cents, 7 cents for those having 5-7 cents and below 10 cents for those having more than that. The government will construct 400 sq. ft. houses on these sites or offer ₹8 lakh instead of construction.

Beyond compensation for structures (with 100% solatium and a 25% incentive for those accepting private negotiations), each family will receive a ₹70,000 resettlement allowance and ₹70,000 for shifting expenses, covering belongings and livestock. A subsistence allowance of ₹3,000 per month for one year is also part of the package.

The plan guarantees livelihood support either a job for one member per family, a one-time grant of ₹7.5 lakh, or a monthly annuity of ₹3,000 for 20 years, adjusted to inflation.

Saltation will provide an additional ₹1 lakh for the rebuilding of cattle sheds, petty shops, or commercial-institutional structures. A one-time financial. Grant of ₹1 lakh will be given to artisans, traders, and self-employed persons.

For self-reliance, affected families can avail of self-employment loans of up to ₹1 crore under the Mudhalvarin Kakkum Karangal scheme, which iseligible for a 30% capital subsidy and a 3% interest subsidy.

Skill training worth ₹15,000 will also be provided for at least one person in each family in the areas of aerospace logistics, construction, IT, beauty and wellness, automotive, capital goods, health care, and tourism.

This announcement has come as the state prepares to acquire over 3,300 acres for the airport project, which at ₹20,000 crore, is one of Tamil Nadu’s largest infrastructure investments ever.
