Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has sanctioned a huge 80,000-seater stadium to be built in Bommasandra that will be one of the largest in all of India. The massive ₹1,650 crore stadium project is being funded fully by the Karnataka Housing Board (KHB), through which it is intended to build this premier sports hub in the southern outskirts of Bengaluru.

The stadium will host international cricket fixtures, accompanied by a multi-sport complex. Features planned include eight indoor and eight outdoor sports arenas, advanced gyms, specialized training centers, Olympic-size swimming pools, athlete hostels, and guest houses. Higher-tier accommodation includes both three-star and five-star hotels, along with a convention hall that would be in place for major international events.

According to officials, the Housing Department has acquired 53 acres in Surya City, and negotiations are on to acquire 22 additional acres from private owners. As part of the land acquisition model, landowners will be compensated through a combination of monetary benefits and developed sites.

Once completed, this stadium will become India’s second-largest ground for cricket, next only to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad, which has a capacity of 1.32 lakh people. “This is not just about cricket. It is about building a complete sports ecosystem that can attract global events and nurture local talent,” a senior Housing Department official said.

This is the period that the authorities have kept open for completing the project after the groundbreaking ceremony has taken place. The new stadium and its infrastructure will not only supplement the sports infrastructure created in Karnataka but will also generate immense economic activity along the Bommasandra-Surya City belt, which is coming up very rapidly in the Bengaluru Metropolitan Region.

The KHB officials believe the project would pave the way for IPL matches, international test series, and multi-sport tournaments. It could also become a training complex for upcoming athletes in different disciplines.

With such scale, facilities, and strategic location, the state government is positioning the Bommasandra stadium as a game changer not only for Karnataka’s sports ambitions but also for its one-stop-shop destination for tourism, events, and private investment.
