The state government has initiated a significant urban transformation plan for Vijayawada and Amaravati, announcing a ₹2,000-crore infrastructure overhaul aimed at strengthening the cities’ drainage, sewage and drinking water systems. The programme has been designed to address long-standing civic challenges, reduce flood vulnerability and prepare the region for rapid urban growth over the next few years.
The latest milestone in this development drive came on 25 November 2025, when MP Kesineni Sivanath and MLA Gadde Rammohan laid the foundation stone for the Five Road project in the East constituency’s 8th Division. Valued at ₹93.08 lakh, the project includes constructing a 1,000-metre drain near the Metropolitan area, which has historically faced waterlogging during heavy rains. This drainage upgrade is expected to serve as a critical component of the city’s broader stormwater management strategy.
Officials involved in the planning process confirmed that a comprehensive Detailed Project Report (DPR) is currently underway to guide the massive ₹2,000-crore redevelopment plan. The proposed upgrades focus on transforming the underground sewage network, expanding stormwater drainage capacity and strengthening drinking water pipelines, particularly in hilly and elevated zones that often experience supply shortages.
Speaking at the event, MP Sivanath said that the government’s intention is to ensure that Vijayawada becomes a city where rainwater never stagnates on the roads. His remark underscores the broader vision of building a resilient urban ecosystem that can support future population growth and climate-related challenges. MLA Rammohan added that renovation work is being taken up simultaneously across major roads, drains and service lines to avoid delays and ensure coordinated progress.
Guided by Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu’s urban development strategy, Vijayawada is expected to evolve into a cleaner, more efficient and future-ready city by 2029. The initiative aims not just to solve current civic issues but to set a benchmark for smart, sustainable and well-planned urban transformation in Andhra Pradesh.
