In a big relief to the construction industry, the Tamil Nadu Stone Quarries, Crusher Units and Lorry Owners Association has consented to reduce the prices of M-Sand, P-Sand, and crushed stone by ₹1,000 per tonne. The decision follows discussions with government officials at the Secretariat on Sunday.
The announcement comes after reports from Tiruchy, Pudukkottai, Perambalur, and Karur districts revealed that quarry owners had recently raised prices despite a hike just two months ago. Concerns had mounted among builders and contractors over the unexpected spike, prompting government intervention.
According to an official release, the meeting also addressed demands raised by the association on April 25. One of the important demands, the seigniorage charge for regular stone fixed at ₹33 per tonne, has been agreed upon by the government. A Government Order (G.O.) in confirmation of this change is anticipated soon.
The state’s decision is intended to stabilize material prices and ensure stable progress of infra and construction activities in Tamil Nadu. Authorities explained that the correction in prices would prevent further hardship on ongoing works already facing inflationary input prices.
The cut in prices assumes particular importance in districts such as Tiruchy and Karur, where M-Sand and P-Sand production is clustered. These materials are critical substitutes for river sand, widely used in building construction.
The government has assured continuous monitoring of quarry and crusher operations to prevent arbitrary price hikes in the future.
With this intervention, the state hopes to keep construction material prices under control, offering much-needed relief to developers, contractors, and individual home builders alike.
