The Tamil Nadu Highways Department has unveiled an ambitious plan under the Comprehensive Road Infrastructure Development Programme (CRIDP) 2025-26, with a total outlay of ₹561.5 crore. The programme includes 132 key projects spanning a total of 230.68 km across Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, and Chengalpattu districts, aimed at improving road quality, traffic flow, and flood resilience.

The projects will focus on road widening, construction of stormwater drains, and culvert building to enhance commuter convenience and safety. Tiruvallur district will see the most significant upgrade, with 76.66 km of roads being widened, followed by Chengalpattu with 31.2 km, Kancheepuram with 22.1 km, and Chennai itself witnessing around 9 km of improvements. Among the notable works, the Naidu Kuppam–Edumadurai Road in Tiruvallur will be expanded from a single lane to an intermediate lane at a cost of ₹1.68 crore.

Flood mitigation is another key aspect of the programme, with seven culverts and bridges worth ₹90.3 crore planned across the districts. Permanent flood restoration works will also include completing macro drains along Pallavaram–Thoraipakkam Road (1.6 km) and the OMR–ECR stretch (800 meters), with a budget of ₹26.2 crore.

In addition, riding quality improvements will be carried out on Maddur–Alamelumangapuram and NN Kandigai–Nalattur roads, along with junction upgrades at Sadras–Madras–Tiruttani Road. Strengthening works are also scheduled for Tiruvottiyur–Ponneri–Panchetty Road, ensuring that the network remains durable under high traffic conditions.

Officials emphasized that the initiative aims to provide smoother traffic flow, safer commuting, and long-term flood resilience, reflecting the government’s commitment to modernizing Tamil Nadu’s road infrastructure. Tenders have already been floated, and construction is expected to begin soon, promising significant improvements for both daily commuters and commercial transporters across the region.

This massive investment marks a crucial step in enhancing connectivity in the Chennai region and neighboring districts, ensuring safer, faster, and more reliable travel for residents, businesses, and tourists alike.
