Tata Steel has commissioned its ₹27,000 crore Phase-II expansion project at its Kalinganagar plant in Odisha, increasing its overall steelmaking capacity in India to 26.1 million tonnes (MT).
The Kalinganagar plant now boasts a capacity of 8 MT, doubling from 3 MT, and is a huge milestone for the state operations of the company. Odisha Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi inaugurated the expanded plant on Thursday.
The growth, commissioned in November 2018, boasts India’s biggest blast furnace with an internal capacity of 5,870 cubic meters. It also has advanced raw material handling, upstream and midstream facilities, infrastructure improvement, and a new cold rolling mill complex.
This growth is a testament to our strong conviction in the potential of Odisha and our long-term commitment to this state,” said T.V. Narendran, MD & CEO of Tata Steel. “Kalinganagar is not only a production center for us—it is what is possible when the community, government, and industry collaborate.”
The new facility would cater mainly to high-end demanding segments such as automotive, infrastructure, power, shipbuilding, and defense with a major emphasis on advanced high-strength steels.
Odisha is the largest investment hub for Tata Steel, with the steel giant investing over ₹1 lakh crore in Odisha during the past decade. Other Odisha units of Tata Steel include the 5.6 MT Meramandali complex (previously Bhushan Steel) and 1 MT Neelachal Ispat Nigam Ltd (NINL) unit. Its Jamshedpur complex is at 11 MT and Gamharia at 1 MT.
The Kalinganagar expansion is a significant step in the expansion strategy of Tata Steel, making it India’s largest and most diversified steel producer.
