Tata Steel has proudly flagged off the inaugural shipment of galvanised coils from the freshly operational Continuous Galvanising Line (CGL-1) at its Cold Rolling Mill complex in Kalinganagar, Odisha. This milestone, achieved on August 6, 2025, underscores the company’s commitment to pushing the boundaries of steel quality and innovation.
The CGL-1 facility features state-of-the-art equipment—including a third-generation air-knife with magnetic stabiliser, an oxidation chamber, and best-in-class secondary coatings—designed to deliver unmatched surface smoothness, durability, and corrosion resistance for advanced coated steels, notably Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS).
The ceremony witnessed senior leadership in attendance: Karamveer Singh, General Manager (Operations), officially flagged off the shipment, in the company of Rabindra Kumar Jamuda, President of the Tata Steel Kalinganagar Workers’ Union, alongside other executives.
The launch of CGL-1 is a pivotal component of Tata Steel’s ambitious Phase II expansion, which has transformed the Kalinganagar facility’s annual steelmaking capacity from 3 million tonnes to 8 million tonnes, powered by an investment of ₹27,000 crore. This expansion includes the commissioning of India’s largest blast furnace, a new Pellet Plant, Coke Plant, and Cold Rolling Mill – all leveraging cutting-edge technology and sustainable practices.
Prabhat Kumar, Vice President of Marketing & Sales (Flat Products), encapsulated the achievement: “The CGL-1 at Kalinganagar has been engineered to produce advanced coated products with superior surface finish, formability, and corrosion resistance… With advanced technology and sustainable practices at its core, the facility reinforces Tata Steel’s position as a trusted partner for the future of mobility.”
This new galvanising line enhances Tata Steel’s ability to serve key sectors such as automotive, appliances, infrastructure, renewables, defence, and shipbuilding, with high-strength, precisely coated steels tailored to rigorous performance requirements.
This dispatch represents more than an industrial achievement—it stands as a testament to Tata Steel’s strategic vision of combining technological excellence with environmental stewardship and domestic growth. The addition of CGL-1 to the Kalinganagar ecosystem reinforces the plant’s role as a beacon of India’s self-reliant and sustainable manufacturing future.
