Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin has announced an additional allocation of Rs 400 crore for the Kalaignar Kanavu Illam Thittam (KKIT) housing scheme. This brings the scheme’s total funding to Rs 3,500 crore for the ongoing financial year, targeting the construction of one lakh concrete houses at a cost of Rs 3.5 lakh per unit.

The scheme aims to achieve a “hut-free Tamil Nadu” by 2030, providing 360 sq. ft. homes equipped with a kitchen. Financial assistance for beneficiaries is disbursed in four instalments through a single nodal account, based on construction milestones: ground level, window level, roofing level, and completion. The government offers discounted cement and steel bars through Tamil Nadu Cements Corporation (TANCEM).

So far, Rs 1,051.34 crore has been allocated for KKIT, with Rs 860.31 crore disbursed for construction progress and Rs 135.30 crore for materials, totaling Rs 995.61 crore. Housing projects worth Rs 1,400 crore are currently underway under KKIT and the Tamil Nadu Rural Houses Renovation Scheme.

The Rural Houses Renovation Scheme has received an allocation of Rs 450 crore to repair one lakh houses built before 2000-01 under earlier schemes. Of this, Rs 150 crore has been spent, completing 15,350 renovation works. The government aims to finish all projects by the end of this financial year, enhancing living standards for rural and underprivileged communities.

This housing push reflects the government’s commitment to improving rural infrastructure, making housing accessible, and promoting socio-economic development.
