According to a Government Order (GO) issued this week, the Tamil Nadu government has sanctioned ₹7,500 crore for the development of roads and flyovers across the state.

Major allocation will fund works on projects over 3,268 kilometres of road and various flyover works, as per a report by Thanthi TV. The expenditure comes in as part of the commitment made by the state toward infrastructural improvement, announced during the 2024–25 Budget session.

These projects now come under the Highways Department and were cleared during the grant demands in the Assembly. The government looks to fast-track the implementation of these schemes all over urban and rural stretches to ease congestion, improve logistics and last-mile connectivity.

As stated in the GO, the ₹7,500 crore is for the immediate implementation of all the road developmental works mentioned in the Budget. This includes resurfacing of the old stretches, new link roads, and flyovers in traffic-saturated areas.

This is so much more so, being backed with the view of furthering infrastructure development of the state and clamouring towards removing travelling bottlenecks in fast urbanising districts. The Highways Department has already framed the execution of the projects on a district basis, giving preference to stretches with poorer connectivity or very high accident rates.

With this single funding proposal that targets over 3,200 km of road network, Tamil Nadu is embarking on one of its largest road improvement programs in recent times. The officials say many work orders will go out over the coming weeks.

This is expected to result in heavy employment opportunities in the construction sector while at the same time reducing transit time for both goods and their movement.
