Tamil Nadu Government Seeks Public Input on Proposed Cricket Stadium in Coimbatore

The Tamil Nadu government had sought public opinion on its proposed international cricket stadium and recreation center in Ondipudur, Coimbatore. The initiative will ensure that the landmark project incorporates local feedback as well as environmental and social concerns.

The initiative was first proposed by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin last year as part of his party’s Lok Sabha election manifesto. The stadium, planned to be a state-of-the-art facility, will come up on 30.36 acres of land that was once part of the open-air jail of Coimbatore Central Prison Department. This proposed project center is now owned by the Youth Welfare and Sports Development Department.

The new stadium will have a minimum seating capacity of 30,000 people and massive parking space, a Sports Development Authority of Tamil Nadu (SDAT) official confirmed. Already progress has been made to the last stage of the DPR wherein the stadium is designed to comply with international standards.

The DPR is almost ready and Udhayanidhi Stalin, Minister for Youth Welfare and Sports Development has approved three design proposals. Next week, SDAT Member Secretary Meghanatha Reddy will submit the report and the designs, which will be treated as a proposal, to the Chief Minister, who will then take the final call on the design of the stadium,” the official said.

The government has called for public suggestions to be included in the project, extending an invitation for the public to be part of the project, aligning with principles of transparency and public participation. The stadium is set to strengthen the sports infrastructure in Tamil Nadu and make Coimbatore a major sporting city.
