Union Minister for Steel and Industries, HD Kumaraswamy, underscored the pivotal role of steel in driving India’s development at the National Metallurgist Awards. Highlighting the sector’s contribution to the nation’s progress, he stated, “Steel powers our progress, from skyscrapers to highways and defence to railways.”
Kumaraswamy emphasized steel’s centrality in achieving India’s goal of becoming a USD 5-trillion economy under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership. “Steel reflects India’s resilience and ambition on the global stage,” he noted, while acknowledging challenges like market volatility, sustainability, and innovation.
The minister reaffirmed the government’s commitment to bolstering the steel industry through policies such as the National Steel Policy 2017 and the Production-Linked Incentive (PLI) Scheme for Specialty Steel. He stressed the urgency of promoting a circular economy and enhancing scrap recycling initiatives.
Innovation emerged as a critical focus area, with Kumaraswamy urging collaboration between steelmakers and top research institutions like IISc and IITs. He highlighted the specialty steel sector as a cornerstone for future growth and global competitiveness.
In line with India’s ambitious target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070, Kumaraswamy placed the steel industry at the forefront of sustainability efforts. He advocated adopting hydrogen-based steelmaking and renewable energy solutions to ensure environmentally responsible production.
The minister’s remarks come at a time when the Indian steel sector is witnessing transformative changes aimed at positioning it as a global leader. The focus on sustainability, innovation, and policy support underscores the industry’s role in shaping a resilient and progressive India.
