The long-awaited railway flyover at Singaperumal Koil near Chengalpattu was finally inaugurated on February 19, 16 years after the construction was first approved. Long overdue, this infrastructure project will provide tremendous relief for thousands of commuters who have struggled through years of catastrophic traffic congestion.”

Local people and regular commuters spoke of their joy and relief after the announcement, with a Thanthi TV report describing it as a ”dream come true.” The flyover would help to cut travel time on one of the nation’s busiest corridors, minimizing delays and improving connectivity to the surrounding areas.

The Highways Department had originally planned for the construction to be done by December 2024, but the project is speeding up to become operational nearly a year ahead of time.

Singaperumal Koil is a small town with more than 30 villages and thousands commuting from the area for work, education, and business. The stretch before the flyover has always had a reputation for its jam-packed vehicles bumper-to-bumper with cars often queuing for two kilometers on the National Highway.

Singaperumal Koil to Sriperumbudur Road is one of the most vital arterial roads in the Chennai suburb area. It is not new, a connecting point for vehicles bound for Oragadam SIPCOT, an industrial hub that attracts heavy commercial traffic. Due to the presence of a railway crossing in the area that would remain closed for long durations of time, even during the day, only to let express trains through, the situation worsened further. This repeated blockade resulted in massive traffic jams, making commuters’ lives even more difficult.

The new bridge will help enhance the travel experience for citizens by reducing congestion around this busy junction and streamlining access between the Granary and Weaver’s Park. This new change will improve both movement and business in the area and is expected to bring about a big revolution in the sector, said residents and transporters.
