Airports Authority of India (AAI) is now formulating a modern satellite terminal of Chennai International Airport to handle the increasing wave of passenger traffic coming in. The terminal is intended to fulfill the growing demand of the busy airport that is processing about 65000 passengers every day.

Strategically located near NH32, the satellite terminal will feature various infrastructure upgrades, including multi-level parking, upscale office spaces, and further establishment of aerobridges for passenger convenience. The aim is to address congested conditions and provide overall connectivity in line with increasing passenger traffic volumes, all while the long-anticipated Parandur Greenfield airport is under construction.

One of the crowning features of the project will be an elevated corridor, which will dramatically enhance the convenience with which travelers may access the terminal. The corridor will begin near Madhas Arts and Science College in Thandalam and run along the sidelines of Adyar River, providing seamless access to the terminal.

The proposal by officials of the AAI has been submitted to the Tamil Nadu State Government with the expectation of speedy approvals so that work can begin right away. The progress on this front is expected to address the current passenger travails and further position Chennai airport as an efficient gateway for domestic and international travelers.

While timeframes for starting civil works at the terminal have not been specified, it nevertheless denotes an important milestone in the modernization of the city’s aviation infrastructure to meet the said increased demand. Experts believe it to be indeed that temporary but significant measure to plug the gap till Parandur rises and shines.

It forms part of a wider push to build urban infrastructure and transportation networks across Tamil Nadu, in keeping with the state’s commitment to bolster its credentials as a logistics and connectivity hub in South India.
