Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited, the corporate entity of Visakhapatnam Steel Plant, has achieved a major operational milestone by recording its highest ever combined daily production from its two Steel Melting Shops. On December 24, both shops together produced 20,934 tonnes of liquid steel across 143 heats, setting a new benchmark for the integrated steel plant.
The latest achievement surpassed the previous record of 142 heats recorded in January 2021 and highlights the improving stability and coordination within the steelmaking operations at Visakhapatnam. According to company officials, the performance was driven by meticulous process planning, uninterrupted material movement, and consistent equipment availability throughout the day.
Steel Melting Shop 2 also posted its best single day performance since commissioning, producing 73 heats and 11,169 tonnes of liquid steel. This exceeded its earlier record of 72 heats achieved in August 2025, underlining the growing reliability and contribution of SMS 2 to overall plant output.
Senior management at Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited said the record was the result of close coordination between production, maintenance, and logistics teams. Continuous monitoring on the shop floor, strict adherence to operating schedules, and disciplined execution were cited as key factors enabling the smooth achievement of the milestone.
The management also commended employees across departments for maintaining safety and quality standards while delivering higher productivity. Officials noted that such performance reflects the strengthening operational culture at Visakhapatnam Steel Plant and demonstrates the workforce’s commitment to consistent improvement.
Industry observers view the development as a positive signal as the company continues efforts to stabilise and strengthen operations. Improved capacity utilisation and reliable steelmaking performance are seen as critical for sustaining long term competitiveness in a challenging market environment.
The latest production record is expected to serve as a reference point for future planning at the plant. With a renewed focus on operational discipline and efficiency, Rashtriya Ispat Nigam Limited aims to sustain momentum and enhance output levels while reinforcing Visakhapatnam Steel Plant’s role as a key contributor to India’s steel sector. The milestone reinforces confidence among stakeholders and supports broader efforts to position the plant for sustained growth ahead strategically.
