Officials from Chennai Metro Rail say all the work on the Poonamallee-Porur elevated section of Line-4 from Lighthouse to Poonamallee will be completed by June. Work on railway track construction is already scheduled to complete by March while electrification and final touches are gaining momentum.

The entire distance covered by Phase II of the Chennai Metro Rail Project is 116.1 km. These are broken into three corridors that include 45.4 km from Madhavaram to Siruseri, the Line-3 corridor, 26.1 km Lighthouse-Poonamallee corridor, and the Line-4, and 44.6 km Madhavaram-Sholinganallur corridor, which constitutes the Line-5. Of these, the Lighthouse-Poonamallee stretch is an important development.

The underground segment would be at Lighthouse going to the Kodambakkam flyover. On the elevated stretch, will run Kodambakkam Powerhouse through the Poonamallee bypass. The total is nine underground and 18 elevated stations. Notably, the Mylapore Metro Station and the double-decker flyover connecting Lines 4 and 5 are considered engineering marvels.

Currently, track-laying and station construction are in full swing along the Poonamallee-Porur stretch. The bridge construction at various locations, including Karaiyanchavadi, Kumananchavadi, and Kattupakkam, is expected to be completed by March. Metro officials aim to begin trial runs in April, with a four-month testing period to ensure safety and efficiency before opening to the public in December.

The first metro train is already undergoing testing at the Poonamallee depot, and a second train is expected to arrive in Chennai by the end of this month. Once the track is fully prepared, trial runs will commence on the Poonamallee-Porur route.

Following this, work will progress on the Porur-Powerhouse section, with completion slated for June 2026. The entire Nagar Panagal Park stretch is expected to be ready by March 2027. With the rapid pace of construction, Chennai residents can look forward to a significant boost in metro connectivity in the coming years.
