PM Modi Unveils ₹4,900-Cr Infra Push in Tamil Nadu, Boosts Connectivity and Trade

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation stones for ₹4,900 crore worth of infrastructure projects in the state of Tamil Nadu and visited the port city of Thoothukudi and inaugurated several projects related to aviation, ports, highways, railways, and power transmission on July 26, 2025.

Infrastructure growth also includes a new terminal in the Thoothukudi Airport in the Chettinad traditional structure design. The new terminal spans 17,340 sq.m. Crafts have an extended 3,115-metre runway, and provide 21 check-in counters, three aerobridges, seating space for 644 passengers, and modern baggage and security systems. Increases capacity handling from 156 to 1,400 passengers per hour.

He also inaugurated a 306-metre north cargo berth built at the VOC Port at a cost of ₹285 crore. This facility will cater to larger vessels and is expected to generate 800 jobs, including both direct and indirect.

Besides, the Prime Minister inaugurated a four-lane Sethiyathoppu–Chozhapuram highway, which has contributed ₹2,357 crore to improving road connectivity in this area. Another ₹200 crore was earmarked for a six-lane upgrade of the road to the VOC Port for streamlining traffic movement.

In terms of railways, 1,032 crore worth of railway projects were opened across the Nagercoil and Tirunelveli divisions to improve regional rail connectivity.

In terms of energy, an interstate transmission system was dedicated for ₹548 crores to evacuate 2,000 MW from the Kudankulam Nuclear Power Plant. The upgrade in transmission is expected to strengthen the power supply across southern states.

These projects will facilitate a considerable transformation of Tamil Nadu’s logistics and infrastructure backbone, offering immense thrust towards industrialization and job creation as well as regional connectivity.
