Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways, Nitin Gadkari, announced that the proposed six-lane elevated corridor connecting Maduravoyal and Sriperumbudur on NH-48, estimated at Rs 600 crore, will receive government approval by January 2026. This ambitious infrastructure project is set to significantly ease traffic congestion in Chennai and strengthen connectivity to the city’s major port.
The corridor, spanning several key industrial and residential zones, is designed to reduce travel time along one of the busiest stretches of Chennai’s road network. Once operational, it is expected to cut travel time between Maduravoyal and Sriperumbudur considerably, while also improving freight movement efficiency. The project is part of the central government’s broader plan to upgrade national highways and promote smoother, faster road transport corridors across urban and peri-urban areas.
Gadkari highlighted that the elevated corridor will enhance logistics and trade in Chennai, offering faster access to industrial hubs and port areas. This aligns with the government’s ongoing efforts to reduce logistics costs to 9% by the end of the year, boosting India’s competitiveness in both domestic and international trade.
The elevated corridor will feature modern construction techniques, sustainable design practices, and smart traffic management systems to ensure safety and efficiency. Its strategic alignment with existing national highways will facilitate seamless integration with other infrastructure projects, including expressways and key arterial roads connecting Chennai to Bengaluru and other neighboring cities.
The announcement reflects the government’s continued focus on improving urban mobility, reducing congestion, and promoting economic growth through enhanced transport infrastructure. Local residents, businesses, and industrial stakeholders are expected to benefit from smoother traffic flow and reduced transit times.
The Maduravoyal–Sriperumbudur elevated corridor is a key milestone in Chennai’s urban infrastructure development, promising to deliver faster commutes, safer travel, and improved connectivity for trade and commerce. With construction approvals set by January 2026, this Rs 600 crore project is poised to redefine road travel in Chennai and strengthen the region’s economic backbone.
