The Madurai Corporation has embarked on road relaying works in the city, covering 718 roads at a cost of ₹65.53 crore. The work extends to Zones 2, 3, and 5, and will reach residents in 21 wards.

Tamil Nadu Minister of Registration and Commercial Taxes P. Moorthy attended the bhoomi puja ceremonies in Subramaniapuram, Jaihindpuram, and Madakulam on Thursday, with the Mayor Indrani Pon Vasanth, District Collector M. S. Sangeetha, and Corporation Commissioner Chitra Vijayan.

The minister underlined that quality would be maintained in no way and that work would stick to standards. “Several stretches of roads were damaged because of rains in the recent past. These locations have been surveyed by the Corporation, and relaying work has already commenced,” he informed reporters, assuring that there was no dearth of funds for the project.

The relaying of the road plan was earlier moved by Commissioner Chitra Vijayan and approved by city councilors. Eligible firms have been awarded contracts.

Further, Minister Moorthy said a modern garbage transfer station would be established in Kochadai at an expense of ₹9.74 crore soon. With the capacity to process up to 200 metric tonnes of trash every day, the plant has been designed to enhance solid waste management in the city.

Though most of the road works seem to be clustered in Madurai West, Moorthy explained that all 100 wards were taken into account. “Keeping public requirements in mind, a detailed study was undertaken by officials, and the government sanctioned the amount accordingly,” he stated.

Road works and waste infrastructure upgradation are huge investments in the civic development of the city towards enhancing urban mobility and sanitation.
