In a major facelift, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) has planned a ` 10-crore comprehensive renovation for the Koyambedu Wholesale Market Complex. The official added that the work is in the tender stage and is expected to be completed within eight months after the site is handed over.

The renovation aims to restore the market’s aging infrastructure and elevate its appeal. Major improvements will involve extensive painting work and repairs along the compound wall adjacent to the CMDA Park boundary. Moreover, the cycle stand and RO water stand painting work will also be done to make it functional and good-looking. The Koyambedu Market Management Committee office, too, will be given a new coat of paint, while civil repair work will also be carried out wherever needed.

Common areas across the complex will not be neglected. Both the food grain market wall and the wall opposite the toilet block (toilet in the railway station) will be painted, creating a uniform and fresh look around these shared areas. But the overhaul wouldn’t reach individual shops, which have been sold to vendors. In line with the Tamil Nadu Budget guidelines, pathway repairs too have been omitted from the project.

The construction of three new arches in designated areas is part of an effort to integrate modern infrastructure into the historical aesthetics of the area. Constructed in concrete and embellished with clay Mangalore tiles, these arches will serve as a visual nod to the architectural heritage of the region. A new lighting scheme will also be installed throughout the complex. High-mast lights, T-shaped light poles, street light poles, and LED floodlights will be put up to improve safety and visibility for persons going to the market in the evening hours.

To keep the quality in the entire project process, the technical people are arranged to work on-site during remodeling to oversee the renovation and ensure they are in line with the CMDA specifications and normal building codes.

In another development, the CMDA will also be taking up another project to repair the road encircling the market. The estimation for this project is in process, tenders will be called for the execution. This two-fingered approach reinforces CMDA’s dedication not only to preserving but also to renovating one of Chennai’s major commercial landmarks.
