The Karnataka Maritime Board has unveiled an ambitious coastal transport plan that could significantly reshape passenger mobility along the state’s western shoreline. The proposed initiative includes a dedicated coastal ferry service between Mangaluru and Maravanthe in Udupi district, along with a Water Metro project planned around Mangaluru city.
According to officials, the proposed ferry corridor will span around 110 kilometres and offer a viable alternative to the heavily congested NH 66. The route is planned with five intermediate stops at Old Mangaluru Port, Hejmadi, Malpe, Kota and Maravanthe. Purpose built jetties are proposed at each location to ensure safe and efficient boarding, while also supporting tourism oriented development along the coast.
The ferry project is estimated to involve an investment of approximately Rs 37.8 crore and will be executed through a public private partnership model. Under the proposed structure, the selected private operator will receive a concession period of 20 years, enabling long term operational stability and service optimisation. Karnataka Maritime Board officials presented the proposal at the Coastal Karnataka Tourism Conclave, highlighting its potential to improve regional connectivity and reduce road traffic pressure.
In parallel, the board has also outlined plans for a Water Metro system around Mangaluru, with an estimated investment of about Rs 180 crore. The project aims to integrate water based transport with existing urban mobility networks, creating a seamless multimodal system for daily commuters and tourists. The Water Metro is expected to draw inspiration from similar initiatives in other coastal cities, focusing on frequency, affordability and environmental sustainability.
Together, the coastal ferry and Water Metro projects reflect a broader push to unlock the economic and tourism potential of Karnataka’s coastline. Improved connectivity is expected to benefit local communities, support coastal tourism hubs such as Maravanthe beach, and encourage sustainable transport practices. If implemented on schedule, these initiatives could position Mangaluru as a model coastal city with diversified and resilient transport infrastructure.
Officials said detailed feasibility studies and stakeholder consultations will guide final execution, with an emphasis on safety standards, reliable schedules and long term viability for passengers and investors alike. Environmental clearances will be prioritised.
