Bengaluru, the IT hub of India, has long struggled with infrastructure issues, from pothole-ridden roads to traffic congestion across key corridors like the Outer Ring Road (ORR). Addressing these challenges, Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar has reiterated that the Karnataka government is fully committed to implementing permanent and sustainable solutions for the city’s infrastructure woes.
Speaking to the media, Shivakumar emphasized that threats and pressure from industry players will not influence government action. His comments came after prominent business leaders, including former Infosys CFO Mohandas Pai and Biocon Chairperson Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw, urged immediate intervention following BlackBuck’s decision to relocate operations from Bellandur, citing commuting difficulties and inadequate road infrastructure.
The ORR, a crucial IT corridor, is notorious for traffic bottlenecks. Shivakumar assured that the government is taking proactive steps to ensure smoother traffic flow, pothole-free roads, and better overall road maintenance. Meetings have been conducted with officials, and contractors have been given strict deadlines to complete pending work.
Shivakumar highlighted that the Chief Minister, as the Chairman of the Greater Bengaluru Authority (GBA), has also prioritized this issue, with plans for a dedicated session to finalize actionable solutions. “Officials have been tasked with drafting a comprehensive plan of action. By the end of the week, we expect concrete solutions to be in place,” he said.
He further noted that Bengaluru remains a preferred destination for Fortune 500 companies due to its talent pool and systemic advantages. Despite challenges, the city attracts over 25 lakh engineers, along with a significant international workforce, highlighting the importance of timely infrastructure upgrades to sustain growth.
The Deputy CM dismissed criticisms from political opponents, asserting that adequate funds for road and infrastructure projects are being mobilized at the state level, despite limited central government support.
With a clear roadmap and strong political will, Bengaluru’s infrastructure challenges may finally see lasting improvements, ensuring safer roads, reduced congestion, and a more business-friendly environment for the city’s thriving IT and industrial sectors.
