Jindal Steel has announced a significant capacity expansion at its Raigarh facility in Chhattisgarh, reinforcing its commitment to India’s fast growing infrastructure and industrial sectors. The company plans to double its structural steel production capacity from 1.2 million tonnes per annum to 2.4 million tonnes per annum by mid 2028, responding to rising domestic demand for heavy and ultra heavy steel sections.
The expansion is aimed at supporting large scale infrastructure, energy and industrial projects that increasingly require specialised high strength structural steel. According to the company, strengthening domestic manufacturing capacity will also help reduce India’s dependence on imported structural steel, particularly for complex and large format applications where supply reliability and quality consistency are critical.
As part of the expansion, Jindal Steel will set up a new steel mill at the Raigarh site while upgrading existing rolling and processing facilities. Currently, the plant manufactures parallel flange structural sections ranging from 100 mm to 900 mm in depth, with sectional weights reaching up to 333 kg per metre. Post expansion, the facility will be capable of producing sections up to 1,100 mm in depth with weights of up to 1,500 kg per metre, among the largest structural steel sections manufactured in India.
These heavy and ultra heavy sections play a vital role in the construction of bridges, refineries, power plants, metro systems and large industrial complexes. With infrastructure investment accelerating across the country, the availability of domestically produced high capacity structural steel is expected to support faster project execution and improved cost efficiency.
The Raigarh expansion also aligns with national priorities focused on infrastructure creation, import substitution and strengthening manufacturing ecosystems. By investing in advanced production capabilities, Jindal Steel aims to contribute to long term supply stability while supporting engineering innovation and employment generation.
The company stated that the expansion reflects its confidence in sustained demand growth driven by urbanisation, industrial development and energy transition. Once completed by mid 2028, the upgraded Raigarh facility is expected to play a key role in meeting India’s future structural steel requirements and reinforcing the country’s position as a competitive steel manufacturing hub.
