Government Approves Rs 2,869.65 Crore Varanasi Airport Expansion

The Indian government has greenlit a substantial development plan for Varanasi’s Lal Bahadur Shastri International Airport, allocating Rs 2,869.65 crore towards its expansion. Approved on June 19, 2024, the plan aims to transform the airport’s infrastructure significantly.

Currently capable of handling 3.3 million passengers annually, the airport will see its capacity rise to 9.9 million passengers per annum upon completion of the project. A key component of the plan is the construction of a new terminal building spanning 75,000 square meters. This modern facility is designed to accommodate 6 million passengers annually and manage up to 5,000 passengers during peak hours.

In addition to the new terminal, the development plan includes extensive upgrades to the airport’s runway and apron facilities. The runway will be extended to 4,075 meters in length and 45 meters in width, enhancing operational efficiency and accommodating larger aircraft. A new apron will also be constructed to accommodate up to 20 aircraft at a time, further streamlining airport operations.

The government’s approval of this ambitious project underscores its commitment to enhancing air connectivity and infrastructure in Varanasi, a city of cultural and religious significance in Uttar Pradesh. The expansion is expected to not only cater to the growing number of domestic and international travelers but also boost tourism and economic activity in the region.
