With a huge emphasis on improving Southern Chennai traffic due to congestion, the Greater Chennai Corporation has called for bids for the construction of a new flyover at the rapidly busy Sardar Patel Road junction. The project, valued at ₹231.86 crore, is part of the broader city initiative to improve not only traffic flow but also infrastructure in key transit corridors.
The new flyover will run from the intersection of Sardar Patel Road and Velachery Main Road to the Guru Nanak College junction on the 200-feet Radial Road. This stretch, falling under Division 172 in Zone 13, is a tangle that has witnessed heavy vehicular movement throughout the day and is among the more significant bottlenecks to commuters traveling between Central Chennai and Southern suburbs like Velachery and Pallikaranai.
The newly constructed structure is likely to limit bottlenecks in the area and enable an easier passage into high-pedestrian locations, effectively, the IT corridor, GST Road, and the airport.
The project is under the jurisdiction of the Chennai district, and it shall be carried out by an eligible contractor chosen through competitive bidding. The orderly proposal linked to bidders states that for uploading their bids on the portal as the procedure is to request acceptance, the bidders should meet all required eligibility and technical specifications. Such preconditions involve the experience in similar infrastructure works as well as the considerable financial capacity to undertake a large-scale urban flyover.
This tender plan will be active till August 21, 2025, to receive bids for its construction.
This has been one in a series of civic infrastructure projects that the Corporation is planning under its urban mobility push. Earlier in the year, the city cleared several road and flyover projects in response to increasing traffic volumes and to further improve public transport integration.
Officials believe that with the timely completion of this project, future traffic needs in this rapidly expanding urban zone will be met, and existing arterial roads will be less burdened.
Currently, the tender is live, and construction is expected to commence sometime around the end of this year after the technical evaluations and final awarding of the contract have been completed.
