As the Northeast monsoon draws near, residents throughout Chennai are expressing serious concerns about the delays in finishing several important flyover projects in the city. They worry that these unfinished constructions could lead to worse flooding and traffic jams, adding to the challenges faced during the critical rainy season.

One of the biggest worries comes from T. Nagar, where the long-awaited flyover on Usman Road is still not finished. “This project was supposed to be done last year. With the rains just around the corner, damaged sewer lines and the narrowed road near the site are causing even more issues. If the flyover isn’t completed soon, our neighborhood’s readiness for the monsoon will take a big hit,” said local resident V.S. Jayaraman.

In nearby CIT Nagar, residents are sounding the alarm about stormwater management. B. Kannan, a local, pointed out that the original design of the bridge, which he accessed through an RTI request, was changed, raising concerns about how it will affect drainage. “They need to speed up the work to ensure stormwater flows smoothly into the canal. If not, flooding could get worse,” he warned.

Over in the western parts of the city, the delay in finishing the Sannathi Street flyover intended to connect E.V.R. Periyar Salai and Union Road is also causing anxiety among residents. “Once it’s completed, this flyover will help ease traffic in areas like Maduravoyal, Nolambur, and Ambattur. But with the delay, commuters are still stuck in traffic jams,” explained R. Saravanan, a local resident.

Residents are also calling for urgent action on the Ganesapuram flyover and the construction of a box culvert across the railway track, both of which are still incomplete. These projects are seen as crucial for alleviating traffic pressure and improving drainage in low-lying areas.

Officials from the Greater Chennai Corporation (GCC) have promised that the Sannathi Street flyover will be finished by the end of this month and they mentioned that land acquisition for the Ganesapuram flyover is underway.
