The expansion under Phase 2 of Chennai Metro Rail is the first pillar structure in the world that will not only support up to five trains at one point but also serve them simultaneously according to Maalaimalar.

The new, ambitious phase is to add three new metro corridors to the present two. This will hugely enhance the connectivity of the city. The existing two corridors – from MGR Chennai Central to St. Thomas Mount and Wimco Nagar to the Airport – will now be joined by three new routes.

The third corridor will connect Madhavaram to Sipcot (Siruseri), thereby expanding access to crucial industrial and commercial areas. The fourth corridor will run from Poonamallee to Light House, while the fifth will stretch from Madhavaram to Sholinganallur, linking major urban and suburban zones.

Notably, because of engineering problems and the huge costs involved in implementing it, corridors 4 and 5 will share five stations: Alwarthirunagar, Valasaravakkam, Karambakkam, Alapakkam, and Porur. This strategic design aims to optimize the use of resources while enhancing the metro’s overall efficiency.

It will also help reduce traffic congestion in the city by enhancing public transport capacity. Thus, the integration of these new corridors with the existing infrastructure of Chennai Metro is going to offer a reliable alternative to road travel.

This pillar design, the first of its kind in the world, along with the new corridors, marks the significant development in the history of Chennai’s metro system as Phase 2. Millions of residents will enjoy easy and fast commuting.
