Widening and flyover construction works along the Chennai–Trichy National Highway are causing severe traffic snarls in Chengalpattu and surrounding areas, disrupting daily commutes and freight movement.
The ongoing project, aimed at expanding the stretch between Paranur and Dindivanam, follows the recent upgrade of the Chengalpattu–Tambaram highway into an eight-lane corridor. Preliminary works from Chengalpattu to the Athur toll plaza are already in progress, including road re-laying and removal of foot overbridges.
Three major flyover constructions are underway: one at Pukathurai near Chengalpattu, another at the junction connecting Uthiramerur, and a planned one at the four-way intersection on Padalam-Guduvanchery Road. Widespread excavation and earthmoving activity along the 45-km length are resulting in frequent traffic jams, particularly during rush hours.
Commuters, both office-goers and lorry operators, have been experiencing delays as buses, lorries, and omnibuses struggle to maneuver the congestion points. Locals say the disruptions have increased in the past few weeks because of concurrent work on several points of infrastructure.
Road transport operators and drivers called for the authorities to speed up the construction before the monsoon season to avoid further road deterioration and commuter inconvenience.
Though the project will ease connectivity and cut traveling time in the long term, residents emphasize the importance of enhanced traffic management in the interim phase to ensure minimal disruption.
