The Central government has given the green light for a major infrastructure push in Puducherry, approving Rs 436.18 crore for the construction of an elevated corridor and grade separator along NH-32. The 3.877-kilometre four-lane project will connect Indira Gandhi Square with Rajiv Gandhi Square, two of the busiest junctions in the Union Territory.
Planned entirely within the existing Right of Way, the project includes a 1.821-kilometre elevated structure aimed at addressing severe congestion on one of Puducherry’s most important road corridors. Once completed, the elevated corridor will provide smoother travel, significantly reduce travel time, and ensure seamless movement of vehicles across the city’s key routes.
Ramps built as part of the project will offer direct connectivity to Villupuram via NH-332, Tindivanam via NH-32, and the city’s main bus stand, making it a critical link for commuters and long-distance travellers alike. In addition to improving vehicular flow, the project has been designed with safety and accessibility in mind. Pedestrian crossings, sidewalks, and service lanes are part of the blueprint, ensuring better facilities for residents and safer roads for all.
The approval also includes the development of a 46-kilometre four-lane stretch on NH-332A between Marakkanam and Puducherry. This extension will strengthen regional connectivity, linking Puducherry to major economic centres and logistics hubs, and further boosting trade, tourism, and industrial growth in the region.
Urban planners and traffic experts have long identified the Indira Gandhi–Rajiv Gandhi Square corridor as a bottleneck for smooth movement. With thousands of vehicles using the stretch daily, congestion has been a persistent challenge. The upcoming elevated road is expected to transform travel efficiency, reduce fuel wastage, and improve overall quality of life for commuters.
The project stands as a strong commitment from the government to modernize Puducherry’s infrastructure, enhance connectivity with neighbouring states, and promote economic growth through efficient road networks.
