The ambitious Rs 20,000 crore expansion plan has been unveiled for Bokaro Steel Plant, Union Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy announced. At the Steel Authority of India Limited BSL, a mega project with this ambitious development will increase its production capacity to 7.55 MTPA from the present 5.25 MTPA a big leap ahead of the country in the list of steel manufacturing.

This brownfield expansion project will feature the construction of a new blast furnace, advanced rolling mills, and sinter as well as coke oven facilities. There is going to be significant employment generation as the investment will generate 2,500 permanent jobs and, on estimates, around 10,000 indirect positions are to be created through the development.

It lines up with the vision of reaching an annual production target of 300 million tonnes per annum for steel production in India by 2030. It helps support the national efforts toward de-carbonization. Thus, the Carbon footprint reduction aspect shall be balanced here at this plant for sustainable growth to help future-proof India’s Steel.

In another related development, the Minister visited the Tasra coal mine, a big site for coking coal supply to the nation. The Tasra mine is to be operational from September 2025. The installed capacity of 3.5 MTPA of domestic coking coal would ensure a consistent supply of raw materials for steel.

Together, these efforts not only enhance the capabilities of Bokaro Steel Plant but also support India’s overall industrial development and sustainability agendas while strengthening its position in the global steel market.
