ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) Authorized to Commercialize Steel League for Road Applications in India. It is a landmark initiative paving the way for ArcelorMittal Nippon Steel India (AMNS) to obtain the technology license that will permit it to market and sell scientifically processed steel slag as a material for road construction in the Indian market.
The endorsement, which comes from the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR)-Central Road Research Institute (CRRI), authorizes AMNS to take advantage of CRRI’s special technology for the processing of steel slag aggregates in the Hazira steel plant located in Gujarat. The consequent result is the convergence of steel slag, a waste product of steel production-into a material with superiorities reserved for road construction.
Steel slag roads generate some considerable advantages compared to conventional bitumen-based roads. According to AMNS, they are 30-40% cheaper and can withstand the forces of time up to three times longer before calling in for repairs. This makes a great difference in the maintenance and repair needs. Their high strength and durability ideally suit them to India’s varied terrain and climatic conditions, spanning the coastal belts to the hilly regions.
“By this license, we will be enabling circular economy initiatives for converting industrial waste into sustainable construction solutions”, said the company in a statement.
Road infrastructure development is one of the main foci of India’s economic growth; therefore, the use of steel slag aggregates will gain increasing momentum as an alternative, capable and eco-friendly material. Indeed, this change marks the advance toward a new precedent, in which one steel mill opens the door for others to adopt similar green practices toward environmentally responsible industrial output.
