In a significant move for urban transport, the Tamil Nadu government, which presented the 2025 state budget on Friday, has revealed the expansion of the Chennai Metro network under Phase 4. The expansion focuses on improving connectivity and reducing congestion in major areas of the city.

A Detailed Project Report (DPR) will be prepared for the two major metro expansions:

  • Tambaram – Guindy via Velachery (21km)
  • From Lighthouse to High Court (6 km)

The government has also identified three key metro corridors that will be funded in the coming decade:

  • Kilambakkam from Chennai Airport
  • Poonamallee to Parandur
  • Koyambedu to Avadi

Currently, the Poonamallee-Porur corridor (Line 4) is fast-tracked among the various projects and will be commissioned by 2025 end. This corridor is likely to ease traffic congestion and enhance connectivity in the western part of Chennai.

New Metro Lines in Chennai

Once approved by the Union Government, the metro rail projects in Madurai and Coimbatore will be implemented as well as mentioned in the budget. These projects will afford Tamil Nadu’s growing cities modern and efficient urban transit solutions, according to Finance Minister Thangam Thennarasu.

A Move in the Right Direction for Public Transport

These initiatives will help the Tamil Nadu government to strengthen its public transportation infrastructure, create sustainable urban mobility, and minimize road congestion. Expected to improve the transit network of the city significantly, and change the daily commute for the better, the metro expansion in Chennai is a part of Phase 4 of the project.
