Tamil Nadu is going all out to improve worker housing across its proliferating industrial centers. The state government is meeting the rising demand for affordable and well-equipped housing as global manufacturers expand into tier-3 towns like Hosur, Tuticorin, and Tirunelveli. Over the next five years, over 39,600 new beds will be added in Krishnagiri, Tuticorin, Tirunelveli, Tirupur, and Tiruvannamalai.

Industries Minister T.R.B. Rajaa stated that government concern over workers safety and ease in the shelter will remain top. The TNIHPL was constituted for supervising massive housing schemes, where workers are given residential amenities, as a part of large-scale industrial estates. “Aligning industrial expansion with worker-centric housing solutions will put Tamil Nadu on a national scale of benchmark in terms of industrial growth inclusive of sustainability,” he said.

One of the major projects is Vidiyal Residency, a joint venture between Tata Electronics (TEPL), Tamil Nadu Infrastructure Fund Management Corporation (TNIFMC) and Tamil Nadu Industrial Development Corporation (Tidco). It is situated at Nagamangalam, Krishnagiri. The facility will be carrying 36,000 beds and 14,308 beds are in construction currently. The state government has allocated the land for the project.

As Hosur’s population is expected to double to 1.5 million in the next decade, industrial experts stress the need for large-scale urban planning, including high-rise residential developments and a fast railway system connecting Krishnagiri’s industrial nodes. Former president of the Hosur Small and Tiny Industries Association, K. Velmurugan, highlighted the importance of improving local amenities to retain workers, many of whom currently commute from Bengaluru.

In Tuticorin and Tirunelveli, investments are pouring into the renewable energy and manufacturing industries. The 870-bed industrial housing facility at Gangaikondan Sipcot Industrial Park in Tirunelveli is ready for completion by 2026, with Tata Power Solar reserving 500 beds for its employees.

Further west, Tirupur will need one lakh new homes in the next decade, with industry leaders calling for satellite towns to support its workforce. Experts cite China, Vietnam, and Japan as successful models in industrial housing emphasizing the need for affordable dormitories, integrated facilities, and public-private partnerships.

Tamil Nadu has now developed a regional housing master plan that identifies Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri and Salem; Coimbatore, Tirupur, and Erode, as the next industrial hubs. With strategic house building, it is opening sustainable, worker-friendly, industrial growth in the state.
