Approval has been granted to Jindal (India) Ltd by the Odisha High-Level Clearance Authority (HLCA) for establishing a steel plant at the greenfield stage with an investment projected at ₹3,600 crore. This in itself is a huge contribution to the developing industrial setting in the state, representing a total investment commitment of ₹15,000 crore over three phases to be completed by 2030.
The new plant will primarily produce high-value special coated steel products, and will incorporate world-class processing equipment, including a Cold Rolling Mill (CRM), Continuous Galvanizing Line (CGL), and Colour Coating Line (CCL), which will have a cumulative production capacity of 9.6 lakh tonnes per year. The first phase is expected to commence by 2027.
The project is being developed by Jindal India Steel Tech Ltd (JISTL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Jindal (India). Plans for the long term envision JISTL ramping up the plant’s capacity to 30 lakh tonnes per annum in flat steel products within this decade.
“This landmark approval clears the path for long-term industrial development in Odisha and further strengthens Jindal’s commitment towards high-value steel manufacturing in India,” said the company.
Besides making a difference for Odisha with respect to becoming a steel manufacturing hub, the project will also create substantial employment opportunities and promote auxiliary industrial activity in the region.
Earmarked to strengthen Jindal’s foothold in coated steel, this project announcement is distinct from the Jindal Steel & Power and JSW groups. This comes as specialty steel products are in great demand in the automotive, infrastructure, and consumer durable sectors.
