The extension of Coimbatore Western Bypass Road has been awaited for a long time and the State Highways Department is ready to launch the second phase once it receives administrative clearance. In the budget presented this year, the Tamil Nadu government set aside ₹348 crore to build a 12.5-kilometer stretch up to Kanuvai. The project is intended to combat traffic jams and enhance access in this area.
Progress of Phase One
Phase 1 of the Western Bypass is an 11.8km four-lane from Madukkarai to Madhampatti. About 60% of the construction is done as of now, with an expected completion by August 2025. This phase will surely improve the traffic flow and commute in the area.
Dealing With Thai Land Acquisition
The government is also carrying out the acquisition of land for the second phase and it is on the verge of completion. Additionally, it has begun acquiring the land needed to develop the bypass’ third phase. After the admin sanction of Phase Two, the tendering process shall be initiated for the selection of a contractor for construction.
Project Background and History
The Western Bypass idea for the city has been there for more than a decade. In 2010, a ₹2.84 billion 26-kilometer Western Ring Road was planned to link Madukarai close to the ACC Cement industry with Mettupalayam Road through Perur Road and Marudamalai Road (next to Bharathiar University) and Thadagam Road (Kanuvai). It was met with initial delays and overhauls owing to land acquisition problems and public opposition, however.
Efforts resumed in 2021 and land acquisition began; as of July of that year, 50% of the land acquisition had been completed. The execution of the project was then planned in three phases. For the first phase, which includes land acquisition and construction, the government released ₹171 crore. The completion of Phase One and the commencement of Phase Two are major milestones in the development of infrastructure in Coimbatore.
Anticipated Benefits
Benefits of Western Bypass for Coimbatore and its people on completion: Some potential benefits could be less traffic in the city, better connections to different areas, and a better economy with solid transport links. The bypass is also expected to bring environmental benefits through reduced vehicular emissions due to less idling in traffic.
Future Outlook
The State Highways Department is still firm on completing the Western Bypass project promptly. Sanction of Phase Two by the administration is pending while work on land acquisition for Phase Three is currently taking place, leading to steady development of the bypass. Any project that faces a delay in timelines would also delay the benefits of that project to the taxpayers and the department would do its best to stick to the projected timelines: the statement added.
“We request the public to bear with us given the inconvenience caused due to the Coimbatore Western Bypass Road Project. Bringing the decades-old conversation to life with the partnership of many sectors.
