Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) has made remarkable strides in the Phase 2 expansion, with TBM “Peacock” (DL 1074) completing an underground drive of 2.047 km and breaking the surface at the Kodambakkam Ramp Retrieval Shaft close to Meenakshi College on Arcot Road.
The TBM was launched from the Panagal Park Crossover on May 2, 2024, and passed under 190 buildings, two churches, and the Kodambakkam Flyover through the densely built urban terrain underground. Body life has not been disturbed at all.
This is the longest completed stretch of tunnel so far in Corridor 4, which stretches from Lighthouse to Poonamallee Bypass. The underground part of the corridor is 10.03 km long and is being carried out by ITD Cementation India Ltd using four TBMs as part of the Phase 2 execution of the metro project.

The tunnel boring work is supported by several international funding agencies like the ADB (Asian Development Bank), AIIB (Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank), and NDB (New Development Bank), as a part of the overall effort to strengthen infrastructure in the city.
The breakthrough ceremony was attended by senior officials from CMRL, engineers from ITD Cementation, and representatives of consultants for the project. A celebration honoring engineering achievements, as well as the city’s slow progression toward an extended and effective metro network.
With metro connectivity fast taking shape under Phase 2, this success in the tunnel makes Chennai nearer to faster, greener, and more sustainable urban transit.
