The Chennai Metro Rail viaduct at Alandur, as part of the ambitious Phase II Corridor 5, is scheduled to be completed by December 2025, officials asserted while attending a high-level inspection by Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Thursday.

The viaduct is a key part of Corridor 5, connecting Madhavaram to Sholinganallur through Alandur. The section runs through the busy Kathipara junction, which led Chennai Metro Rail Limited (CMRL) to implement the intricate ‘balanced cantilever method’ of construction a technique intended to reduce traffic hindrances in constructing elevated infrastructure in densely populated urban areas.

During his visit, Chief Minister Stalin was hoisted to the top of one of the elevated structures for an aerial view of the ongoing work. He was accompanied by Minister T.M. Anbarasan and senior Metro and government officials.

At Alandur, the viaduct features a 31-metre-tall pillar and a challenging 125-metre-radius curve — a feat of engineering that highlights the intricacy of metro construction in Chennai’s busy junctions.

The officials told the CM that out of 80 segments in this corridor, 30 are already finished. The Chief Minister also requested updates on work in Corridor 3 from Madhavaram to Siruseri.

Phase II of Chennai Metro, which is 118.9 km long and spans Corridors 3, 4, and 5, is going to significantly ease traffic congestion and improve public transport in the city’s expanding urban area.

With Alandur being a crucial inter-change linking several arterial roads and key metro corridors, completion of the viaduct within time is deemed crucial to maintaining project timelines and passenger convenience.

The officials added that the use of new construction methods would permit minimum disruption to traffic, even as the city transport system undergoes a complete transformation.

The Alandur viaduct, once completed, will further strengthen Chennai’s push for a modern, efficient, and integrated urban transit system.
