Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah has announced a budget outlay of ₹ 7,000 crore towards meeting the target of bringing the city’s infrastructure out of the rut, which is more than double its previous allocation of ₹ 3,000 crore. The move is part of a larger effort to address the city’s well-known traffic congestion and improve overall connectivity.
This budget has several flagship projects that the government has lined up, including the 40.5 km double-decker flyover, which has been integrated with the Namma Metro Phase-3 expansion. The ambitious ₹8,916 crore project will improve traffic flow and connectivity in major areas of the city.
At an estimated investment of ₹3,000 crore, the government plans to create a 300 km road network along the canal buffer zones. As part of the “Brand Bengaluru” initiative for 2024-25, the budget has allocated ₹1,800 crore for 21 projects aimed at increasing the city’s livability and infrastructure. The city houses around 875 Global Capability Centres (GCCs) and a special purpose vehicle will be set up to ensure efficient usage of these funds and expedite high-priority projects.
With the introduction of more than 19.80 km of the metro network, the total length will be increased to 98.60 km in two years and will improve connectivity to Devanahalli as well. The area also has upcoming hotels and is already home to the multibillion-dollar Devanahalli Business Park, in addition to two upcoming IT parks spread over 400 acres of land, establishing an important commercial corridor between Karnataka as well as Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu.
The government has synchronized allocation of ₹3,000 crore towards addressing the city’s drainage & sewage issues which will be handled by Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) & Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB).
The Peripheral Ring Road project, a delayed mega project, has been finally renamed as the Bengaluru Business Corridor with a budget of ₹27,000 crore. The 73 km road will be developed with funds raised through HUDCO Bank and land acquisition has started through dedicated teams.
These moves are a clear reflection of this government’s determination to map Bengaluru into a city with better connectivity and livability, taking care of its immediate infrastructural issues.
