Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) officials carried out a surprise raid on an aluminium alloy ingot manufacturing unit at Sipcot Industrial Park, Vallam Vadagal, Sriperumbudur. The development came following reports that the firm was conducting business without the requisite BIS standard mark, which is mandated under regulatory guidelines.

The raid was conducted suo motu under section 28 of the BIS Act, 2016 of the relevant Bureau officials to bypass all manufacturers/stockists/sellers who do not obey prescribed standards of goods. “It was found that the Aluminum and Aluminum Alloys (Quality Control) Order, 2023, which makes it mandatory for all aluminium alloy ingots to bear the ISI mark and all such ingots are to be made on an active Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) license, has been violated by the manufacturer,” the ministry said. Without these certifications, the operation is forbidden.

On deeper investigation, it was found that the company had committed a direct violation of Section 17 of the BIS Act, 2016 about the misuse of standard marks. No action was reported against the manufacturer at the moment while the head of Shri B The BIS Chennai (branch) head, G Bhavani, confirmed to the agency that strict action would be taken against the manufacturer. Offenders are punishable with up to two years imprisonment or a fine up to ten times the value of the goods concerned under the act.

Manufacturers have been advised to follow BIS norms to maintain quality and safeguard the interests of customers. A public reporting facility has also been opened through the BIS Care app and official email channels for incidents of any misuse of ISI marks or non-compliance.

This raid showcases the government’s commitment to maintaining quality standards and preventing the entry of such materials into the market. Such punitive measures are essential when the construction and industrial sectors are so dependent on certified raw materials to ensure the safety and integrity of the industry.
