In a major infrastructure push, the Tamil Nadu government has announced a Kathipara-style cloverleaf flyover on the Trichy-Madurai National Highway (NH) to tackle rising traffic congestion near Panjapur. The location is poised to become a key growth hub, with upcoming developments like a Tidel Park and a wholesale market.

Municipal Administration Minister K.N. Nehru, who was in Trichy to lay foundation stones and inaugurate projects worth ₹70 crore under the Trichy Corporation, confirmed the flyover plan. “The flyover at Panjapur will span 3.5 km with six lanes. Land acquisition is complete, and the project will be executed by the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI),” he said. He added that it would be modeled after Chennai’s Kathipara cloverleaf interchange.

NHAI officials corroborated that a Detailed Project Report (DPR) is underway, with cloverleaf designs among the options being evaluated. Simultaneously, work is progressing on a four-lane semi-ring road to link the Trichy-Madurai and Trichy-Karur highways.

Addressing queries on pending Rail Over Bridge (RoB) projects at Maris (Fort Station) and Trichy Junction (Phase II)—Nehru stated that the state’s share of work is done and called on Southern Railway to expedite its responsibilities.

The minister also shared updates on urban infrastructure plans, revealing that a metro rail proposal for Trichy is under active discussion. A feasibility survey is set to begin soon. He further said the city corporation’s expansion by merging nearby village panchayats is in the final stages. Ward delimitation is on the cards, with public objections currently being collected.

In a key development, Nehru also laid the foundation for Phase II of the IBT Link Road, which will cost ₹68 crore. The 2.1 km road includes a 1.1 km elevated stretch connecting Woraiyur to Kudamurutti, with a 10-meter width. The project is slated for completion in 1.5 years.
