The capital market landscape in India is set for an important shift as SEBI Chairman Tuhin Kanta Pandey highlighted the strong potential of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises from the southern states to enter the public markets. He noted that many MSMEs in states like Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh and Kerala have demonstrated a stable financial position, making them well suited for raising capital through initial public offerings.
Speaking at an industry interaction organised by the Confederation of Indian Industry in Chennai, the SEBI chief said that a large number of robust MSMEs in the region are still outside the capital market ecosystem. According to him, enabling these businesses to access public funds would open a new phase of growth for the sector. He emphasised the need to help MSMEs understand market processes and prepare their internal systems before moving towards public listings.
SEBI is currently working on several measures to simplify regulations under the Listing Obligations and Disclosure Requirements. This comprehensive review aims to improve ease of doing business for companies while ensuring that investors continue to receive reliable and transparent information. The chairman stated that the review process has already begun and may take four to six months to complete.
To assist MSMEs further, SEBI is also collaborating with CII and other ecosystem players including stock exchanges and depositories. The objective is to guide enterprises through the complexities of public markets and address the challenges that prevent them from tapping equity capital.
The regulator is additionally focusing on investor protection and awareness campaigns. Plans are underway to release simpler summaries of offer documents so that new and retail investors can understand company information more clearly. SEBI is also preparing multilingual communication channels to reach audiences across tier two and tier three cities, ensuring that financial literacy expands alongside market growth.
With strong financial performance and rising interest from entrepreneurs, the southern states are emerging as a key region poised for expanded participation in the Indian capital markets.
